چکیده

Abstract: This study suggests the possibility of application of utility theory to causal inference. Arai (2011) has shown that people tend to think causality stronger when they are involved in the task than when they are not. Therefore we attempted to explain the effect of ego-involvement on causal reasoning by gain and loss. Two hundreds and thirty-five university students inferred the relation between cause and effect and decided their action in terms of taking the action of cause in an imaginary content. Each participant was allocated into one of four conditions: gain, loss, involvement or control. The result indicated the action was less in loss group than in ego-involvement group. This is consistent with a prediction from utility theories. Based on these findings, it appears that the effect of ego-involvement on causal reasoning can be explained by utility.

Cause of the difference in the cognitive process between intervention and observation on causal induction -A study of the effect of ego-involvement-

Pearl (2000) insisted on the importance of intervention in correlated events for causal induction. In addition, Sloman and Lagnado (2005) demonstrated that people infer differently, depending on whether they observed the events or intervened in them. I suppose that this result can be explained by the difference in the degree of egoinvolvement. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect ...

An Introduction to Inference and Learning in Bayesian Networks

Bayesian networks (BNs) are modern tools for modeling phenomena in dynamic and static systems and are used in different subjects such as disease diagnosis, weather forecasting, decision making and clustering. A BN is a graphical-probabilistic model which represents causal relations among random variables and consists of a directed acyclic graph and a set of conditional probabilities. Structure...

Self-Signaling and Prosocial Behavior: a Cause Marketing Experiment1

We test an information theory of prosocial behavior whereby ego utility and self-signaling crowd out the effect of consumption utility on choice. The data come from two field experiments involving purchases of a consumer good bundled with a charitable donation. Across experimental cells, we randomize the price level and the donation level. A model-free analysis of the data reveals non-monotonic...
